Google Messages has recently started testing a new feature called ‘messages editing’, according to reports. This feature has been highly anticipated since December 2023, when hints of message editing capabilities were first discovered. The feature is currently being rolled out to beta testers, indicating that Google is in the final stages of development and it may soon be available to all users worldwide.

The ‘messages editing’ feature was found in the latest beta version of the Google Messages app, specifically in the messages.android_20240506_04-RC00.phone.openbeta_dynamiccom.google.android.apps.messaging version. Users who are part of the Google Play Store beta programme with this version installed will now have the option to edit messages after sending them. However, there is a limitation to this feature – it will only work if the recipient of the message is also using the same beta version of the app. If the recipient is not on the same beta version, the edits made by the sender will not be visible on the receiving end.

According to reports from Tipster AssembleDebug, the editing feature comes with a 15-minute time limit. This means that users will only have 15 minutes after sending a message to make edits to it. The process of editing a message involves long-pressing the message, clicking on a newly added pencil icon, and then making the necessary edits in a new text box. Once the edits are confirmed by tapping on a checkmark icon, they will be reflected on the recipient’s end. Additionally, Google is also providing an edit history feature that allows all participants in a conversation to view the original messages and see all the different versions that were edited.

While the ‘messages editing’ feature is currently being tested by beta testers, Google has not yet provided any information on when it will be rolled out globally to all users. However, based on the progress of testing and the positive feedback from beta testers, it is expected that the feature will be made available to all Google Messages users in the coming weeks.

The introduction of the ‘messages editing’ feature in Google Messages is a step towards enhancing user experience and providing more control over messaging content. With the ability to edit messages within a time limit and view edit history, users can now communicate more effectively and accurately.
