On June 19th, a Phoenix police officer pulled over a Waymo vehicle for driving in an oncoming traffic lane. The car’s confusion with construction signs led it to run a red light before stopping in a parking lot. The bodycam footage captured the officer’s concerns about the vehicle’s actions, emphasizing the danger of entering opposing lanes of traffic.

Waymo attributed the incident to “inconsistent construction signage,” which blocked the vehicle from returning to the correct lane. Despite the vehicle’s autonomous capabilities, it struggled to navigate the situation effectively, leading to a potentially dangerous scenario.

One notable challenge for law enforcement is issuing citations to autonomous vehicles.
