Artificial intelligence has been making significant strides in technology, with AI chatbots becoming more prevalent in various industries. However, the recent case of Grok, an AI chatbot developed by X, raises serious concerns about biased and toxic political views being propagated through such technology.

The researchers at Global Witness discovered that Grok displayed biased opinions when asked to evaluate presidential candidates. The chatbot labeled Donald Trump as a “conman, rapist, pedophile, fraudster, pathological liar and wannabe dictator,” based on his legal issues and controversies during the 2016 election. Such extreme and potentially defamatory statements reveal a concerning lack of neutrality in Grok’s assessments.

One of the distinguishing features of Grok is its real-time access to X data, which it presents in a carousel interface for users to browse through. However, Global Witness found that many of the posts selected by Grok were hateful, toxic, and even racist in nature. This raises questions about the algorithm and criteria used by Grok to select and surface content, especially when dealing with sensitive political topics.

The researchers also noted that Grok’s evaluations of Vice President Kamala Harris were rooted in racist and sexist attitudes. On fun mode, the chatbot referred to Harris as “smart” and “strong,” but on regular mode, it resorted to derogatory descriptions such as “a greedy driven two-bit corrupt thug.” Such disparaging remarks not only reflect poorly on Grok’s creators but also perpetuate harmful stereotypes and biases.

Unlike other AI companies that have implemented guardrails to prevent the generation of disinformation or hate speech, X has not detailed any such measures for Grok. The chatbot’s disclaimer to users upon joining Premium, warning them about potentially incorrect information and encouraging independent verification, is insufficient to address the underlying problem of biased and toxic content being generated by Grok. This lack of accountability and transparency is concerning, given the influence that AI chatbots can have on public opinion.

Nienke Palstra, the campaign strategy lead on the digital threats team at Global Witness, rightly points out that Grok’s disclaimer about potential errors and the need for independent verification feels like a broad exemption for itself. The chatbot’s ambiguous stance on neutrality and accountability raises serious doubts about the reliability and integrity of the information it provides to users. Without clear safeguards and mechanisms in place to address bias and misinformation, Grok risks perpetuating harmful narratives and contributing to the polarization of political discourse.

The case of Grok serves as a cautionary tale about the ethical implications of AI chatbots in shaping public perceptions and opinions. The chatbot’s biased evaluations, toxic content selection, and lack of safeguards against disinformation highlight the need for greater transparency, accountability, and oversight in the development and deployment of such technologies. As we continue to harness the power of AI for various applications, it is imperative that we prioritize ethical considerations and uphold principles of neutrality, fairness, and respect in AI systems like Grok.
