Microsoft recently faced allegations from the US Federal Trade Commission regarding the pricing changes for their popular Game Pass service. The FTC claimed that the new pricing structure offered a “degraded” experience for consumers, going against their previous warnings about potential consumer harm following the acquisition of Activision Blizzard. However, Microsoft responded by labeling the FTC’s assertions as “misleading” and providing a different perspective on the situation.

In response to the FTC’s concerns, Microsoft explained that the price increase for PC Game Pass subscriptions was necessary due to the addition of new features and content. The company also introduced a new ‘Standard tier’ for Xbox Game Pass aimed at console players, which offered a lower price but did not include day-one access to new games. This move was criticized by the FTC as a “degraded experience” for consumers, which Microsoft vehemently denied in their response.

Microsoft emphasized that despite the price increase, Game Pass Ultimate would offer more value through the inclusion of many new games available ‘day-and-date’, including highly anticipated titles like Call of Duty. From a personal standpoint, the removal of key features or an increase in price without substantial benefits may not align with consumer expectations. For example, the lack of multiplayer functionality in the discontinued Game Pass for Console offering may have been a trade-off for a lower price, but the new pricing structure may not offer the same level of value for consumers.
