It has been two days since a faulty software update wreaked havoc on airlines worldwide, resulting in many carriers grounding flights. Despite efforts to restore operations, airlines like Delta Air Lines are still facing challenges. The total number of cancellations within, into, or out of the U.S. on Sunday reached 1,461, with Delta and United Airlines being the most affected.
Delta’s Chief Executive, Ed Bastian, issued a message to customers on Sunday, acknowledging the ongoing flight cancellations. He mentioned that over 3,500 Delta and Delta Connection flights had to be scrubbed due to the system outage. Bastian explained that a crew tracking-related tool was impacted, making it difficult to process the significant number of changes caused by the technological issue.
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg had a conversation with Bastian regarding Delta’s high number of cancellations over the weekend. The Transportation Department emphasized the airline’s obligation to provide refunds to passengers whose flights were canceled and who choose not to be rebooked.
