AMD’s highly anticipated launch of its new Zen 5 processors, including the powerful Ryzen 9 9950X, has been met with a one to two-week delay. This delay has been attributed to the company’s discovery that some of its chips did not undergo all required testing procedures before being shipped to channel partners.

According to Stacy MacDiarmid, a spokesperson for AMD, the delay is not due to any issues with the actual chips themselves but rather a precautionary measure to ensure all processors meet the company’s quality standards. Jack Huynh, the SVP of computing and graphics at AMD, emphasized the company’s commitment to providing a high-quality experience for every Ryzen user and stated that they are working to replace the initial production units with fresh units.

As a result of the delay, the launch dates for the Ryzen 7 9700X and Ryzen 5 9600X have been pushed back to August 8th, while the Ryzen 9 9950X and Ryzen 9 9900X will now go on sale on August 15th. Despite the setback, AMD remains confident that the additional testing being conducted on the affected chips will not result in any further delays.

The decision by AMD to delay the launch of its Zen 5 processors may have been influenced by the ongoing issues faced by rival company Intel. Intel has been grappling with instability in its 13th and 14th Gen desktop processors, such as the Core i9-13900K and i9-14900K. Intel has identified the root cause of the problem but a patch is not expected until August, leaving users with unstable chips in a difficult position.

In addition to the desktop processors, AMD is also gearing up to launch its Zen 5 laptop chips, codenamed Strix Point and branded as Ryzen AI 9 300. A new addition to this lineup is the Ryzen AI 9 HX 375, featuring a powerful 55 TOPS NPU.

While the delay in the launch of AMD’s Zen 5 processors may be disappointing to some, it is a necessary step to ensure that customers receive products that meet the company’s high standards for quality and performance. By taking the time to conduct additional testing, AMD is demonstrating its commitment to providing a positive user experience for Ryzen users. The company’s decision to prioritize quality over expediency is a testament to their dedication to customer satisfaction.
