Apple, known for its innovative products and loyal customer base, has recently faced a setback in the Chinese smartphone market. According to a recent Canalys report, Apple has been edged out of the top five smartphone vendors’ list in China in the second quarter. This decline can be attributed to the increased competition from domestic brands such as Huawei, Vivo, Oppo, Honor, and Xiaomi.

Apple’s market share in China has been steadily decreasing, dropping from 16% in the same period a year ago to 14% in the second quarter. This decline has led to Apple losing its third-place position from last year, now ranking sixth in terms of smartphone shipments. With only about 9.7 million units shipped, Apple is facing tough competition from local brands that are dominating the market.

One of the key challenges Apple is facing in the Chinese market is the need to stabilize retail prices and protect margins of channel partners. Meanwhile, domestic brands in China are excelling in both hardware and software features, with strategies focused on high-end products and deep collaboration with local supply chains. This has enabled brands like Huawei, Vivo, and Oppo to gain traction in the market.

Looking ahead, Canalys suggests that Apple needs to localize its Intelligence services in China to remain competitive in the next 12 months. Chinese brands have been aggressively incorporating generative AI into their products, enhancing the user experience and attracting consumers. Apple will need to adapt its strategies to align with the preferences of Chinese consumers and leverage local partnerships to drive growth in the region.

Despite Apple’s challenges, the Chinese smartphone market as a whole grew by 10% year on year in the second quarter. With shipments exceeding 70 million units, brands like Vivo, Oppo, Honor, Huawei, and Xiaomi are driving this growth through innovative products and strong sales strategies. As competition intensifies, Apple will need to rethink its approach in China to regain its foothold in the market.
