A recent study conducted by a team of computer scientists from the University of California San Diego and Northeastern University has found that wireless gear-shifting systems in high-end bikes may be vulnerable to cybersecurity attacks. These systems, which are designed to give riders better control over their bikes, could potentially be exploited by hackers to gain an unfair advantage in popular races like the Tour de France.

The researchers specifically looked into bikes with Shimano Di2 wireless gear-shifting technology, which is considered the “market leader” in this space. By recording and retransmitting commands sent between the gear shifters and the derailleur, the researchers were able to perform attacks from up to 10 meters away using off-the-shelf devices. They also discovered that it is possible to disable gear shifting on a specific bike through targeted jamming attacks, rather than affecting all nearby bikes.

The potential for cybersecurity attacks on wireless gear-shifting systems raises serious concerns about the safety and integrity of professional cycling races. Manipulating gear shifts or jamming the shifting operation could not only give hackers an unfair advantage but also pose a significant risk of causing crashes or injuries among riders. These undetectable attacks could undermine the sport’s integrity in a similar way to the history of illegal performance-enhancing drugs in professional cycling.

Collaboration with Shimano

In response to the findings of the study, the researchers are working closely with Shimano to address and patch the vulnerabilities in their wireless gear-shifting systems. UC San Diego reports that Shimano has already begun implementing some of the suggested countermeasures to protect against potential cyber attacks. By collaborating with industry leaders like Shimano, researchers hope to strengthen the security of these systems and prevent any malicious exploitation in the future.
