The Volkswagen “dieselgate” scandal first came to light in 2015, when the German auto giant admitted to installing software to manipulate emissions levels in millions of vehicles across the globe. Former CEO Martin Winterkorn played a key role in this scandal, which eventually led to his resignation from VW, a company that boasts brands like Porsche, Audi, Skoda, and Seat.

Winterkorn also reached a settlement with Volkswagen in 2021, agreeing to pay the company 11 million euros in connection to the controversy.
The Fallout and Consequences
The “dieselgate” scandal has already taken a significant toll on Volkswagen, costing the company around 30 billion euros in fines, legal fees, and compensations to affected car owners, predominantly in the United States. Winterkorn is not the only senior executive to face consequences for the scandal, as former Audi CEO Rupert Stadler was also convicted for fraud by negligence and received a suspended sentence and a fine.
As Martin Winterkorn prepares to stand trial for his alleged role in the “dieselgate” scandal, the repercussions of this infamous saga continue to reverberate within the automotive industry.
