Apple’s iOS 18 is set to introduce a range of artificial intelligence features, including the highly anticipated Image Playground. This new feature allows users to generate cartoon-like illustrations based on text prompts, adding a touch of creativity to the iOS experience.
Recently, Apple shared the first-ever example of an Image Playground creation outside of its usual marketing materials. The illustration features an adorable small dog named Bailey, wearing a party hat and standing behind a birthday cake. This charming image was created by Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, for his wife in celebration of Bailey’s birthday.
While Image Playground is a fun addition to iOS 18, the new mobile OS also includes a range of AI-powered capabilities aimed at enhancing productivity and creativity. Alongside practical AI tools, Apple has integrated some purely entertaining apps, like Image Playground, into the operating system.
Image Playground can be accessed as a stand-alone app or within Messages on iOS 18. Users have the option to generate images by providing text descriptions, selecting photos from their library, or choosing from preloaded concepts. Additionally, three different styles – Illustration, Sketch, and Animation – can be chosen to customize the output.
It’s worth noting that Image Playground is distinct from Genmoji, another AI feature in iOS 18 that allows users to generate custom emoji using text prompts. While both features offer creative opportunities, they cater to different aspects of user experience on Apple devices.
As of now, neither Image Playground nor Genmoji is available in beta versions of iOS 18.1, with only a few other Apple Intelligence features being accessible to developers. This means that examples of Image Playground creations, like Craig Federighi’s adorable dog illustration, have been limited to controlled environments by Apple.
The anticipation for the full release of Image Playground and Genmoji in iOS 18 is building, as users are eager to explore the creative possibilities offered by these AI-powered features.
