Nvidia and AMD are both entering the gaming laptop market with a bang, as they gear up to launch laptops that include AI Copilot Plus features recently announced by Microsoft. Nvidia teased the upcoming “RTX AI PC” laptops from Asus and MSI, which will eventually incorporate Copilot Plus PC features. These laptops will feature up to GeForce RTX 4070 GPUs and power-efficient systems-on-a-chip with Windows 11 AI PC capabilities.

While Nvidia is taking the lead in promoting its RTX AI laptops, AMD is not far behind. These new AMD-powered Copilot Plus PCs may not initially receive Microsoft’s round of AI features at launch, as Nvidia hinted that they will receive a free update to Copilot Plus PC experiences when available. AMD’s latest Strix CPUs are expected to be featured in these laptops, although AMD has not yet provided detailed information about its Strix laptop CPUs.

As Microsoft is moving towards offloading AI models to NPUs, Nvidia is positioning itself to make its GPUs relevant in the AI battleground on PC. Nvidia is launching an RTX AI Toolkit in June that includes tools and SDKs for model customization, optimization, and deployment. These tools will optimize AI models to run with fewer VRAM requirements and higher performance, showcasing Nvidia’s commitment to AI acceleration on laptops.

Nvidia is collaborating with Microsoft on integrating AI models into Windows 11. This collaboration will provide application developers with API access to GPU-accelerated small language models (SLMs) for retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) capabilities. The Windows Copilot Runtime, announced by Microsoft at Build last month, aims to simplify the integration of AI-powered features in apps while leveraging NPUs or Nvidia GPUs for acceleration.

While NPUs excel in power efficiency and are designed for smaller AI models, Nvidia’s PC GPUs outperform NPUs in terms of AI acceleration. Nvidia’s GPUs can handle over 1,000 TOPS for AI tasks, compared to ~40 TOPS performance of NPUs. This performance gap presents developers with a choice between power efficiency and performance when selecting hardware for AI-powered applications.

The upcoming launch of gaming laptops with AI Copilot Plus features from Nvidia and AMD marks a new era in the gaming laptop market. Both companies are positioning themselves to capitalize on AI acceleration in laptops, with Nvidia emphasizing the capabilities of its RTX GPU lineup and AMD preparing to showcase its Strix CPUs. The collaboration with Microsoft further solidifies the role of AI in Windows 11, providing developers with the tools to create AI-powered applications that leverage the performance advantages of GPUs.
