The first of these integrations involves the AI Core platform of SAP, which now supports the Amazon Bedrock AI development service. Furthermore, SAP is enhancing its reliance on AWS chips to power its infrastructure, with plans to upgrade its Graviton chips and utilize AWS Trainium and Inferentia to support its Business AI offering.

Matt Garman, the incoming chief executive of AWS, highlights that thousands of enterprise companies currently leverage SAP solutions on AWS to optimize their mission-critical applications. The deepened collaboration between AWS and SAP aims to make it quicker and simpler for companies to apply generative AI to their core business data, enabling them to enhance efficiency, responsiveness, and sustainability. Through SAP’s AI Core, part of the Business Technology Platform, customers can manage their AI assets in a standardized, scalable, and hyperscaler-agnostic manner.

Expanded Model Options

The introduction of Amazon Bedrock to SAP’s AI Core platform provides organizations with access to a variety of supported large language models, including Amazon Titan, Anthropic’s Claude 3 Opus, Cohere’s Command R models, Mistral 7B, Mixtral 8x7B, and Meta’s Llama, Stable Diffusion, and AI21 Labs. Dr. Philipp Herzig, SAP’s chief AI officer, emphasizes the openness and flexibility of SAP’s architecture, which allows for a broad range of partnerships to incorporate the best technology for specific purposes, such as the high-performing LLMs delivered by Amazon Bedrock.

Enterprise developers can leverage top-performing LLMs to enhance key business processes built on SAP, like streamlining auditing processes in S/4HANA Central Finance by matching bank statements to accounts. Matt Wood, AWS’ vice president of AI products, underscores the increasing interest, investment, and momentum among enterprise customers in implementing generative AI for advanced prototypes and production use cases that are core to their business operations.

Regulated Sector Adoption

The integration between AWS and SAP holds particular significance for companies in regulated sectors that utilize SAP’s enterprise resource planning applications. Regulatory organizations like the New York Stock Exchange, NASDAQ, as well as those in travel, insurance, life sciences, and the public sector, are driving the adoption of generative AI due to their strong data quality, security measures, and data strategy. Matt Wood notes that regulated firms have substantial text data that can be optimized with AI, presenting numerous internal use cases where generative AI can significantly impact operations.

SAP customers can seamlessly incorporate Amazon Bedrock within the Business Technology Platform or RISE with SAP managed cloud offering. Alongside this integration, SAP is expanding its utilization of Amazon chips in its AI infrastructure, with HANA Cloud transitioning from Graviton3 to Graviton4 chips and utilizing AWS Trainium and Inferentia chips for future Business AI products.
