Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence startup, xAI, has come under fire for its environmental impact in Memphis, Tennessee. The company has been accused of contributing to the pollution problem in the area by using natural gas burning turbines at its new data center without a permit. Despite its ambitious goals and groundbreaking technology, xAI is facing scrutiny from environmental and health advocates for its actions.
The Southern Environmental Law Center recently sent a letter to the Health Department in Shelby County, where Memphis is located, and to a regional office of the Environmental Protection Agency on behalf of several local groups. The letter urged regulators to investigate xAI for its unpermitted use of gas combustion turbines and the pollution they generate. The company has reportedly installed at least 18 turbines at its facility, emitting nitrogen oxides (NOx) and contributing to the area’s smog problem.
Though xAI plans to eventually use power from local utilities, it currently relies on the gas combustion turbines to power its facility. This has led to concerns about the significant amount of electricity the plant requires and the resulting environmental impact. The added power consumption by xAI has prompted Memphis Light, Gas and Water to provide additional power to the facility. However, the company still requires an additional 100 megawatts, raising questions about its long-term sustainability and environmental responsibility.
The advocates’ letter highlighted the potential health risks associated with nitrogen oxides in the air, citing symptoms such as irritation of the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs. Breathing high levels of nitrogen oxides can lead to serious health issues, including tissue swelling and respiratory problems. The advocacy groups raised concerns about the lack of transparency and public input regarding the xAI project, emphasizing the significant impact it is already having on the surrounding community.
Businesses in Tennessee are typically required to obtain permits for operating turbines like those used by xAI. These permits establish emission limits, efficiency requirements, and mandate air quality testing to ensure compliance. The lack of transparency and public input in the xAI project has raised questions about the company’s accountability and commitment to environmental regulations. Musk-led companies have a history of disregarding permits and environmental regulations, as seen in previous incidents involving SpaceX, The Boring Co., and Tesla.
