When it comes to car combat games, there are different preferences among gamers. Some prefer a focus on collisions rather than guns, with vehicular mayhem adding an extra layer of excitement to the racing experience. One series that has always impressed in this regard is FlatOut. Known for its intense bumper car racing and impressive crumple zones, FlatOut has recently received updates on Steam that bring a range of improvements and enhancements to the games.
The updates to FlatOut, FlatOut 2, and FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage on Steam have introduced Workshop support, Steam Deck verified status, improved performance, and, in the case of FlatOut 2, re-enabled online multiplayer. The patch notes for FlatOut 2, in particular, stand out with a simple yet effective message: “Restored unused track: ‘Papa Roach – Blood Brothers'”. This not only adds a sense of nostalgia but also gives insight into the game’s development and the era in which it was created.
FlatOut 2 has received a significant number of new features, including new translations, improved support for widescreen monitors, and multiplayer via OpenSpy.net. The updates for the first FlatOut game are also extensive, with similar improvements but excluding multiplayer. Nevertheless, graphical tweaks and minor fixes have been implemented to enhance the overall gaming experience.
FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage, although having the shortest patch notes, should not be underestimated. The recent update focused on adding Workshop support to the game. This is because the Collector’s Edition, released earlier this year, already incorporated additional languages, removed Games For Windows Live DRM, and achieved Steam Deck verified status.
FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage is a unique entry in the series, originally serving as an enhanced console port of FlatOut 2. With new tracks and modes, it can be considered as a kind of FlatOut 2.5. It is essential to distinguish Ultimate Carnage from FlatOut 3, which was developed by a different studio and was met with widespread criticism from fans.
For gamers new to the FlatOut series, Wreckfest, the spiritual successor from the original developer of FlatOut, may be a better choice. However, for those who have already enjoyed Wreckfest and are looking for a similar experience, FlatOut still holds its own. With the recent updates and enhancements, the series continues to offer exciting car combat gameplay and adrenaline-pumping races, keeping the spirit of vehicular mayhem alive.
