Google’s launch of the note-taking app NotebookLM last year marked a significant step forward for researchers, students, and anyone in need of organizing information. The recent update allows users to upload Google Slides and web URLs as sources, expanding beyond the previous limitations of Google Docs, PDFs, and text files. The new Notebook Guide feature creates study guides, FAQs, and briefing documents, while also enabling inline citations for up to 50 sources per project. Each source can now contain a substantial 500,000 words, a vast improvement from the previous five-source restriction. Additionally, users can now ask questions about charts, images, and diagrams uploaded to the platform, thanks to Google’s Gemini 1.5 Pro integration.
Raiza Martin, senior product manager at Google Labs, emphasized that NotebookLM operates as a closed system, relying solely on the provided corpus of information without conducting external web searches. During my firsthand experience with the platform, I found the features to be relatively seamless and intuitive. Although the Notebook Guide was not available for testing, I successfully utilized the new data sources, inline citations, and Gemini 1.5 Pro’s graph analysis capabilities.
One notable limitation I encountered was the inability to add web URL sources during the demo. Despite attempting to upload website links, the sources did not appear in my list, suggesting a potential glitch in the system. It is essential to address such issues promptly to ensure a smooth user experience. Furthermore, it is crucial to clarify that NotebookLM is not designed to generate research papers automatically, unlike alternative tools like Perplexity’s Pages. While Google showcased examples of authors utilizing NotebookLM for analytical purposes, it is essential to manage user expectations regarding the app’s functionalities.
