Instagram has been known for its square format when it comes to uploading photos and videos. However, the company is now testing a new way for users to upload media. This new pilot experiment allows select users to upload photos and videos in a vertical grid format without the need to crop the content into a square. Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, shared details about this new experiment in an Instagram story. He mentioned that the square format was a legacy feature from previous years when Instagram only allowed users to post content in that specific format. However, the trend has shifted, and nowadays, the majority of content uploaded on Instagram is in a vertical aspect ratio. Users primarily use a 4:3 aspect ratio for photos and a 9:16 aspect ratio for videos. This new vertical grid format eliminates the need for users to crop their content down to a square, making the uploading process much smoother.

While this new feature may be exciting for many users, there are concerns about how it will impact those who meticulously curate their profiles. Some users spend time ensuring that their grid lines up perfectly before uploading any content. Mosseri acknowledged this concern and stated that they are working on finding a way to manage this transition effectively. Instagram spokesperson Christine Pai mentioned that they will be closely monitoring community feedback before making any further changes to the platform.

The vertical profile grid format was initially spotted in 2022 by tipster Alessandro Paluzzi. Instagram started testing this feature with a small group of users last year, and it seems that the test phase is now expanding. While the new feature’s availability has not been confirmed by Gadgets 360 staff members, several users on social media platforms have reported seeing the vertical grid format on their profiles. This indicates that Instagram is slowly rolling out this new feature to a wider audience.
