In the world of materials research, the use of synchrotron radiation emitted by ultrafast electrons has been a game-changer. Traditionally, this light is known to be longitudinally incoherent, with a broad spectrum of wavelengths. However, physicist Alexander Chao and his team introduced a groundbreaking concept in 2010 that could potentially revolutionize this field.

By shortening the length of the electron bunches circulating in a storage ring to below the wavelength of the emitted light, Chao and his team discovered a way to produce coherent radiation. This advancement could lead to outputs of several kilowatts of monochromatic, coherent light – a significant improvement over the current technology.

The Role of Isochrone Rings in the SSMB Project

Chinese theorist Xiujie Deng developed a set of parameters specifically for isochrone or “low-alpha” rings in the Steady-State Micro-Bunching project (SSMB). These settings, when combined with laser interactions, create particle bunches as short as one micrometer. The successful demonstration of this concept in a proof-of-principle experiment in 2021 marks a significant milestone in the field.

While the research team from HZB, Tsinghua University, and PTB have made significant progress in verifying Deng’s theory for generating micro-bunches, project manager Jörg Feikes acknowledges that there is still a long road ahead. Drawing parallels to the development of free-electron lasers, Feikes highlights the extensive time and effort required to translate groundbreaking ideas into functional technologies.

The quest for coherent light in materials research is an ongoing journey filled with challenges and opportunities. The research conducted by pioneers like Chao, Ratner, and Deng paves the way for future innovations that could revolutionize the field.
