AltStore PAL, a third-party iOS app store, has finally made its debut in the European Union after undergoing beta testing. This new app marketplace, spearheaded by Riley Testut and Shane Gill, offers a unique alternative to Apple’s App Store. With a focus on providing users with apps that may not be available through traditional channels, AltStore PAL is set to shake up the app distribution landscape.

Installing AltStore PAL is not a seamless experience. Users are required to navigate through multiple warning messages from Apple, cautioning them about the potential risks of installing apps from external sources. Despite the cumbersome nature of the installation process, users willing to persist will eventually gain access to a treasure trove of apps, including the highly anticipated Delta emulator and the banned Clip clipboard manager.

Monetization and Pricing

AltStore PAL has integrated Patreon for monetization, allowing developers to offer beta apps as rewards for funding. The annual fee of €1.50 (plus tax) for AltStore PAL covers Apple’s Core Technology Fee, while Clip requires a minimum monthly Patreon pledge of €1 (plus tax). This unique approach to app distribution and monetization sets AltStore PAL apart from Apple’s strict guidelines in the App Store.

Legitimacy and Compliance

Thanks to the Digital Markets Act (DMA) in the European Union, AltStore PAL now enjoys a legitimate Apple notarized launch. This move signifies a shift towards more open app distribution platforms outside of Apple’s walled garden. Developers like Testut and Gill are pushing the boundaries of what is possible on the iPhone, showcasing innovative apps that may not have been approved through traditional channels.

AltStore PAL is open to submissions from third-party developers, offering a decentralized approach to app distribution. Unlike Apple’s centralized App Store, developers hosting their apps on their own servers can reach users through AltStore PAL by adding additional “sources” to the marketplace. This opens up new possibilities for developers to reach a wider audience and circumvent the limitations of traditional app stores.

The emergence of AltStore PAL in the European Union marks a significant milestone in the world of iOS app distribution. By challenging the status quo and providing users with alternative apps and experiences, AltStore PAL is paving the way for a more diverse and decentralized app ecosystem. As developers continue to explore new avenues for app distribution, consumers can look forward to a more vibrant and innovative app landscape on their iOS devices.
