In light of the U.K. General Election, TikTok has introduced a dedicated in-app General Election center to provide users with reliable and authoritative information leading up to the polls. This move aims to combat misinformation and manipulation efforts by offering official information through its specialized resource. Partnering with Logically Facts, TikTok will not only provide media literacy tips but also key election and voting information from the Electoral Commission. Users will be guided to the General Election Center through prompts and labels on relevant election content, as well as when conducting election-related searches. This approach mirrors the platform’s strategy during the recent Local Elections in England and Wales.

TikTok reports that a majority of U.K. politicians have now established their presence on the platform, with parties such as @uklabour, @ukconservatives, and @libdems creating new accounts. Approximately a hundred Members of Parliament already had TikTok accounts heading into this election, with prominent figures like Labour’s Zarah Sultana and Conservative’s Dr. Luke Evans garnering significant popularity. Moreover, U.K. news organizations are extending their reach to new audiences through TikTok, with outlets like The Daily Mail, Sky News, the BBC, ITV News, and The Sun amassing millions of followers across their respective channels.

The impact of TikTok as an election information source remains uncertain, particularly considering that the platform’s largest user base in the U.K. falls between the ages of 15 and 24. This demographic group typically exhibits lower voter turnout rates, despite their active engagement on the app. However, with many first-time voters belonging to this cohort, TikTok could serve as a valuable platform for fostering discussions on crucial issues leading up to the election. As political parties recognize the significance of TikTok as a potential influencer, there are speculations that this election could be known as the first “TikTok election,” with trends originating from the app shaping public opinion.

Given the platform’s growing importance in the political landscape, it is imperative for TikTok to enhance its measures to safeguard election integrity. Implementing additional moderation strategies to detect AI manipulation and other forms of influence operations will be crucial in the weeks leading up to the election. By providing authoritative resources and combating misinformation, TikTok can strengthen its role in facilitating informed political discourse among its users.
