Cities: Skylines 2 has been facing criticism from players due to the recent release of the Beach Properties DLC. The player reception has been far from positive, leading both developers, Colossal Order, and publishers, Paradox Interactive, to issue a joint statement apologizing for the state in which it was launched. The statement, signed by Mariina Hallikainen, CEO of Colossal Order, and Mattias Lilja, deputy CEO of Paradox Interactive, acknowledges the disappointment expressed by fans and promises refunds for those who purchased the DLC. Additionally, players who acquired the DLC through the Ultimate Edition will receive compensation in the form of Creator Packs and radio stations. The DLC is also being made available for free to those who have not yet made a purchase.

The Beach Properties DLC, intended to be a significant addition to the game, fell short of expectations. Priced at £8.49 / $10, the DLC was criticized for being more of an asset pack than a true expansion, offering only a few new buildings and foliage options without any substantial new features. Surprisingly, the DLC did not even include beach house assets, disappointing many players. Despite the release of mod tools for Cities: Skylines 2 alongside the DLC, these tools were also deemed lacking, as they did not support the import of new assets. This lack of substantial content left players feeling underwhelmed and dissatisfied with the overall experience.

In their apology statement, Colossal Order and Paradox Interactive pledged to make immediate and meaningful changes to the game’s development and communication with the player base. They expressed a focus on enhancing the base game and modding tools, moving away from rushed releases and unrealistic timelines. As a result of this commitment, the planned Bridges and Ports expansion, originally scheduled for later this year, has been delayed to 2025. Additionally, an advisory meeting is being organized to gather feedback from select Cities enthusiasts and discuss potential improvements for Skylines 2.

Hope for the Future

Despite past shortcomings, there remains optimism for the future of Cities: Skylines 2. While some players may be skeptical of promises for improvement, the willingness of the developers to listen to feedback and make necessary changes is a positive sign. The upcoming advisory meeting and renewed focus on game development suggest a genuine effort to address player concerns and deliver a more satisfying gaming experience. With a shift towards transparency and quality content, there is hope that Cities: Skylines 2 can overcome its current troubles and regain the trust of its player community.

The issues faced by Cities: Skylines 2 and the Beach Properties DLC highlight the importance of thoughtful game development and effective communication with players. By acknowledging mistakes, making amends, and committing to improvement, developers can rebuild trust and deliver a game that meets player expectations. It is a challenging journey, but with dedication and a focus on quality, Cities: Skylines 2 has the potential to evolve into a more successful and beloved title within the city-building genre.
