WhatsApp has recently implemented a new feature aimed at enhancing the safety of its group messaging function. The messaging platform, owned by Meta, will now provide users with contextual information when they are added to a group by an unfamiliar user. This addition is meant to equip WhatsApp users with pertinent details about the group they have been added to, along with a shortcut to exit the group if desired.

The latest update introduces context cards for group chats, which will be displayed after a user is added to a group by someone not in their contact list. These cards, featured in the chat window, will contain information about the group to offer users a better understanding of the group dynamics. Notably, the context cards will prominently showcase the name of the user who added them to the group.

WhatsApp’s new group context cards will inform users that they were added to a group by a non-contact and will also display the name of the user who created the group, based on their WhatsApp settings. Moreover, if a user finds themselves in a group they wish to exit, the context card will include a Safety tools option to report any problematic content. An Exit group button will also be available for users who prefer not to participate in the group discussion.

In 2019, WhatsApp introduced a privacy feature under Settings > Account > Privacy > Groups that allowed users to prevent strangers from adding them to groups. When activated, users receive an invitation to join a group if someone outside their contact list attempts to add them. Additionally, users have three days to accept a group invitation before it expires, giving them time to decide whether they wish to join.

The rollout of WhatsApp’s new group safety feature is currently underway, with users across the globe gaining access to the context cards for group chats. With the implementation of these cards, WhatsApp aims to empower its users with greater control over their group interactions and ensure a safer and more secure messaging experience for everyone.
