WhatsApp has been rumored to be developing a nearby file-sharing feature for Android users that utilizes Bluetooth technology for some time now. Despite initial reports emerging in January 2024, the feature has yet to be made available on the beta version of the app. However, a recent report suggests that the instant messaging platform is making additional enhancements to the feature and it may soon be released in beta form. Moreover, there are indications that WhatsApp is also working on a Favourites tab for its users.

A recent discovery by the WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo in the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.9.22 build revealed that the People Nearby feature has been upgraded significantly. Users will now be prompted to grant various permissions for the feature to function properly. These permissions include access to photos, media, and files, as well as access to Bluetooth and location services. The inclusion of Bluetooth and location services is likely intended to facilitate the establishment of a local network between nearby users.

Once users have granted the necessary permissions, they are directed to a new page where they can make themselves discoverable to other users who have activated the nearby file-sharing feature. This enables them to transfer files amongst each other without the need for an internet connection. The feature is touted to be end-to-end encrypted, ensuring the security and privacy of users’ data. Additionally, WhatsApp assures that users’ phone numbers will remain concealed during the file-sharing process.

The introduction of the nearby file-sharing feature on WhatsApp presents a viable alternative to traditional methods of sharing large files over the internet. This is particularly advantageous in scenarios where internet connectivity is unreliable or limited data availability poses a challenge. By leveraging Bluetooth technology and local networks, users can seamlessly exchange files with one another without consuming excessive amounts of data or resorting to cloud services.

WhatsApp’s upcoming nearby file-sharing feature for Android users is poised to revolutionize the way users exchange files within close proximity. With enhanced security measures and improved accessibility, this feature is expected to cater to the diverse needs of WhatsApp users worldwide.
